Re: Who Knows That You Blog?

David asked: Do you tell people you blog?

Only a handful of friends and family know that I have a blog, and unless I send them a link to a specific post, they rarely, if ever, visit. They prefer the big social media platforms, and I understand why. They’re simply easier and more convenient for most people.

And that’s okay. Blogging isn’t for everyone. Most of the people I interact with through my blog are other bloggers, fellow nerds who enjoy building websites and tinkering with HTML and CSS, along with photography enthusiasts and artists. Over the years, I’ve formed some great online friendships through email and conversations on Mastodon.

For me, having a small audience is actually a good thing. It feels less intimidating, and the interactions feel much more genuine than what you typically find on platforms like Facebook or Instagram.

In everyday life, I don’t really promote my blog. But if a conversation turns toward the negative aspects of social media, I’ll sometimes mention the IndieWeb as an alternative and share my link for anyone who wants to explore a different approach.
